Designing desire
I was reading a book which is "desire : the shape of things to come.(published by Gestalten, Berlin 2008)" The introduction was written by Andrej Kupetz who is a important person in German design field. Here, I share one of his speech and some good points on design he wrote in this book.
below are parts of the introduction in the book:
-It is very difficult to argue that there is any real purpose in the design of a chair, which a briefing has laid down should be like anyother chair, but different from it.
-The question about the appropriate form for an object, whcich should arise from its function, has become redundant, since thousands of functions can be stored on media that are only a few nanometres in size.
-There are no patterns of behaviour or rules for designers any more that draw on an ideology with discipline inherent in it.
Designers find themselves within a hard-fought competition of identities.
21st century design is individualists' design to only a limited extent. Design still acts within a stylistic system that is pluralistic in a way that it was not in times of functionalism and that is essentially characterised by four quetions that certainly do imply aesthetic expression and a design language:
can modernism be continued?
what does the future look like?
How can I entertain you?
What can I contribute to creating or sustaining an enveronment that is worth living in?

John Maeda * REEBOK = Vision to a good design

Really interesting shoe project -emoretion- by John Maeda.
I am reading his book - "Simplicity", which is a part of his working-on-progress paper. He tries to figure out what is "simplicity" to him and also provides ten principles of creating simplicity to daily life. It does give a better perspective for me to see the world.
「Vision」
I like to mention about his "SHE" principle in the book. SHE is JM's method about "reduce" and "time".
S= Shrink, H=Hide , E=Embody. Three steps to reduce waste and save time.
Also let you simplify thoughts or things. This also could be read as a vision to different subjects. For a organization, people could follow the vision to solve problems without confusing or to create an innovative result. For an educator, he/she could practice the principle to improve the condition of human environment. No doubt, the prospective vision could be considered to be a company vision, team spirit, individual philosophy or even the key words of a design project.
「Design Concept Key themes」
The interesting part of emoretion project is how JM provides the vision for designers to design the appearance and details (material, texture, colours, usage) of the shoe.
In it, he urges us to embrace our natural desire for personal meaning in everything we do. The shoe design is inspired by this motion intuition. Using Reebok’s iconic Freestyle as his canvas, Professor Maeda’s handwritten code decorates the shoe’s lining and creates the stunning digital paisley print, representing a burst of pure energy and emotion. Holographic straps bring this design to life with your every move, while the velvet-wraped mid-sole and tongue-liner take the shoe to a new level of elegance."
Confident, genius, and fearless are three of seven keys he has found out for the shoe. You won't believe that how this will make design process more efficient.

If we could provide a better vision of life, the way to prove it is to make it into any possible design works. So, a designer now should not only have professional skills but also keep improving life and trying others not try.

Karim Rashid - an elegant and arrogant industrial designer
He designs seven days a week.
Short interview for me to get a sense of his personality and the way of his design thinking. Yes, I am really interested in Karim Rashid. The impact his works gives to the world is enormous. I saw the possibilities of how a designer could use design to change the world. I agree the way he sees the sustainability of design. That's something we need to choose when we do designs. I believe if you are a good designer, you would be able to make the product eco friendly and charming to the world.

Alice Wang
Surprise me

Congratulations to Studio22!!!
Congratulations to Studio22!!! Their works was selected in the 2007 Tokyo Designers Week and sell on line now.
Two of my friends, yiting cheng & sean yu, they hold a studio in Taipei which is focus on the design by the common material - "concrete." What surprise to people is they made it into "Rings." However, this special combination keeps catching our attentions. "Structure, Roughness, and Youth" are what I can feel about. They come from the possibililties of concrete and also touch a little bit Dr. Martens' spirit I think.
I do believe they are giving this old material a new life.

Congratulations to Eric Burns! Best Student work! Safey Product First Place
Eric Burns
A great work from my best friend - Eric who did put kind and open-minded ideas into his works. Especially this piece "Color Guard-Malaria Protection re-imagined", it achieved a unbelieveable stage through INDEX, Business Week, and so on.
The Project Brief : Color Guard mosquito bed net
Color Guard mosquito bed net is the first bed net that has a double-layer that prevents mosquitos from biting through the net. Also, each net is dyed a custom color by its owner with a colored insecticide that impregnates the fibers of the net. It is safe to humans but kills mosquitoes on contact. This huge project was only possible by the efforts of my teammates.

Lee Broom
This designer has a special taste of style. I briefly review his background and found out he was inspired by Vivian Westwood in young age. What an interesting history he has.
This chair catches my eye cause of another project GGN(one CGU undergraduate student) did last semester. They both used the elements of "tradition" and "lighting."And most beautiful point is the traditional form of furniture combines the impact of lighting. They gave me a chance to explore the possiblilty of creating through the old memories and familiar forms.

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Inspiring Industrial Designer Brothers
Algues are at one and the same time interior design components and decorative elements. Reminiscent of plants, the plastic elements can be linked together to form web-like textures - from light curtains to opaque, thick room dividers.
Material: injection-moulded plastic.
Conversation

Herry Sze's Portfolio
My bro , Herry, lives in LA.
He is a social guy who can make friend easily. However, he helps me a lot when I studied in Art Center. I remember two important final presentations he helped me out setting up.
His work gets protential market in China which might not be so successful in a detailed way but definitely nice in the style.

Great News about Adobe Competition 2006
My friend Howard ( Howard Hao-an Tsai) got the first prize of Motion Grapic.
Congratulations!!!
A intern in adobe and 5000 usd award... man that's great.
I am proud of you!!!His work is named "Hungry Planet"
Objective: (copy from Offical Adobe Website)
I wanted to use the visual language of organic food to challenge organic food consumers to rethink, "What if there were a world without genetic modified food?" and to acknowledge a long-forgotten hero, Dr. Norman Borlaug. The project uses all the woodcut illustration done by myself as a graphic design major student. The concept/irony is conveyed subtly in a fun and storytelling way.
Check it out!
