The new direction of design - the US point of view

The trend of capitalism in design...

"BusinessWeek Innovation chief Bruce Nussbaum talks to Frank Tyneski, IDSA's Ducati-driving executive director about new directions for design and innovation
Major trend in the design field."

He briefly mentioned some important topics like below

1.Push economy - Retailers have more pull to tell manufacturers what they want and even hold their own internal design teams to meet more consumers needs and to push manufacturers to create unique products.

2.New design generation:
Challenge: Tools changed to digital experiences.
According to the tools, we hardly indentify individuals' works...but depending on the Internet, overall problem-solving skill has a deeper understanding within the generation.

3.Global collaborative product development:
The difficulty of separating design process into different cultures. For example, form making/form giving shifts to Asia?

Good news for industrial designers.

WOOFY an adorable problem-solving object

Hotty with cute dogs...
A dog shape object makes your life more enjoyable.
This is a design from normann-copenhagen The interesting part of this product is not only the spirit of the project alike Monster Bag but also the way it is promoted (but much better quality though...) However, that's why it costs almost 6000 NT per one...

"The story of Woofy is one of experience, of pleasure and love of design" by Gabriel Nigro.

MYTO - KGID's new chair ... the insight of the manufacture

因為我自己也正在與塑膠模具製造廠商合作,在合作上不難發現角色定位上的困難,然而我發現這家BASF公司有非常明確的公司定位,在他們的flyer上很清楚的表明「we don't do design - we help your design projects even better with the right plastic.」

my Alias work in Art Center

Kitastick linking Chopstick

This is one of my product collection and I bought it in Tokyo. I like the design which explores the possibility of using chopsticks. Like the original concept is "
Have a Kitastick party with your friends. Perfect for kids as well." by majamoo
However, for my own opinion I do believe this design is better for foreigners (who do not use chopsticks daily.)

MIURA 魔拉 I can't believe I fall into this charming modern design.

Konstantin Grcic
He is one of the best industrial designers nowadays. I need to say I don't really fall into his design in the beginning. After seeing his works many times from websites and books, I start to ask some questions to the design. Why could his works keep a extremely clean shape? and still look interesting and catchy.

I saw MIURA in dragonfly store in Taipei. And the chair started to speak to me and wanted me to sit on it. That's a nature of what the shape shows. I can't resist the power of design and the material- plastic. I love the strength from the structure. You don't need to sit on it, but feel it by studying it.

Funny things happened after I want to have it. I don't know which colour should I have!!! Now, I am just like a woman in front of a elegant highheel and can't decide which colour will match her certain dress. It really is not a easy question to answer. Where I want to put it? When will I seat on it? Who will I share its design to? How long will I keep it? All these small questions coming up to my mind made me nervous. I believe this problem must reflect part of my design thinking and life. I think it happens when you need to make decision on a new product development as well. And designers tend to follow the current "trend"or the "fashion" in order to make more profit. That's why few designers will stand out by their sensitive design sense.
...anyways...

MIURA now is my first CHAIR collection. I am loving it.

Congratulations to Eric Burns! Best Student work! Safey Product First Place

Eric Burns

A great work from my best friend - Eric who did put kind and open-minded ideas into his works. Especially this piece "Color Guard-Malaria Protection re-imagined", it achieved a unbelieveable stage through INDEX, Business Week, and so on.

The Project Brief : Color Guard mosquito bed net

Color Guard mosquito bed net is the first bed net that has a double-layer that prevents mosquitos from biting through the net. Also, each net is dyed a custom color by its owner with a colored insecticide that impregnates the fibers of the net. It is safe to humans but kills mosquitoes on contact. This huge project was only possible by the efforts of my teammates.

Infobar2 - Naoto Fukasawa

Fresh
His second version design of Infobar gets a soft feeling of shape.

Dosh All-polymer Wallet

I can't believe it.
'Cause I am doing plastic product designs. Sometimes you will feel so damn bad when other designers had done something similar and nice. This polymer wallet designed by Australia designers who hold a design consultancy called "BlueSky". They are smart to use the quality of polymer - waterproof. The only thing I don't like is that the wallet design is too conservative.

Innovative Material - Seamless Mesh

Smart Smart Smart invention of material - Kaynemail's Seamless mesh. It is composed of two important processes. First is the molding technology, it uses a new way of injection-molding machine which is to mold a ring inside multiple rings. The other is to discover this material's potential. For example,It will apply to the filter system or cargo nets. But what the most interesting part in this case is it came from a need of film-making...

Check it out.

Ski Tub recalls my childhood

Ski Tub(雪盆)簡單的一片PVC(Polyvinyl chloride,聚氯乙烯),當配合著地球恩賜的雪以及簡單的空間角度設計,就變成老少咸宜的遊樂活動。

[Contest Result] Ceramics for breakfast

This toaster is awesome.
The creative part of the design is composed of a solution of heating and the fun of watching it heating.

The term of this concept, I am curious about the words which the designer said that " This toaster is designed to engage the user, re-invigorating(give it energy again) the social context of toasting by questioning everything about what we toast with today."

So this is the question:
what is the social context behind the behavior we toast or the period when we have breakfast today? and what's the difference of the context compared to before?

Take me for example, I live with a middle class family. The behavior of having breakfast seems is based on the life my family has and the place I live. Another interesting thing is the components of an apartment for 社會新鮮人 in Taiwan. Normally, the landlord won't provide gas service and kitchen. Then if you think deeper, it is not hard to realize why we have so many breakfast restaurants here. Especially, the place is around schools and offices.
Based on urban society. If we talk about the behavior of breakfast, I assume it is similar to the situation of the restaurant.. Why? cause of the traffic. People need to save time for it. Then, how we enjoy our breakfast? How important is the behavior of having breakfast in Taiwan?

However, I believe people still want to change it. It is reality which is not perfect. So, as a designer, we need to understand the condition of a product for Taiwanese definitely should be considered more appropriate.
